Kohler Crevasse prep sink with a touch control

A fantastic timesaver for avid cooks, the Crevasse Prep Sink by Kohler will wash any food wastage down the drain with no further ado! The integrated garbage disposal and rinsing action of the sink is operated by a simple button control. And it looks great too… the sink is of stainless steel construction, with two buttons on a small stainless steel panel located nearby. At the touch of a button you can select a quick release of water, or a more powerful flow to activate the disposal unit as well. A futuristic touch is incorporated into the clean lines of the sink – a constant blue light indicates the rinse action is underway - a flashing blue light means the garbage disposal is in operation. Even cleverer than that: the button operation is only activated by a human touch to ensure that it is not accidentally triggered by a misplaced pan or the like. The 33 inch sink is great for large or small areas, and is available now from Kohler.

HighTech washbasin Ammonite

Introducing new concrete washbasin shaped as a fossil, the Ammonite washbasin from HighTech. Inspired by the archaic beauty of ammonites, this unique design showcases the organic qualities of concrete. The washbasin can be produced in widths between 90 cm and 330 cm with a standard depth of 56 cm, and is available in several colors. It can be installed either with a table-mounted or wall-mounted tap. "Ammonites are an extinct species of cephalopods which lived in the sea about 400 million years ago. Their shells are found all over the world and they are very much sought-after by fossil-hunters, their collector’s value depending on size and the state of preservation. The fascinating shape of ammonite fossils – which resembles a rolled up helix – is the basic design element in the new HighTech washbasin. The association of water and fossil design is a clear allusion to the prehistoric inspiration for the Ammonite washbasin." HighTech

New Product Debut by Linkasink - Patterned Bronze and Mother of Pearl Mosaic sinks

New Product Debut by Linkasink - Patterned Bronze and Mother of Pearl Mosaic sinks

Linkasink Bronze bowl sinks

Introducing the new line of patterned Bronze and Mother of Pearl mosaic sinks from Linkasink.
Patterned Bronze sinks are being hand-cast one at a time, and are available in a selection of patterns and two color types - antique bronze and white bronze (shown above). The white bronze sinks are far more durable than a metal sink with a satin nickel finish. The use of white bronze was originally made popular by the decorative hardware industry to produce high-end residential door handles and other hardware that would stand up to heavy use and the outdoor elements. Linkasink is among the first companies to create sinks in white bronze. The sinks measure 17" in diameter x 6" deep with a 1.5" drain. They can be used as a vessel or a drop-in sink. Suggested retail price is $1600 - $1700.

Linkasink Mother of Pearl mosaics sink

Mother of Pearl mosaic sinks are available in two new stunning colors - dusk (shown above) and midnight. Both of these colors add a level of sophistication to a beautifully designed sink. The mosaic tiles are individually hand laid in the basin of a metal bowl. The metal exterior of this Wok Vessel sink is available in bronze or white bronze finishes. Mother of pearl, the smooth lustrous lining in shells, comes from pearl oysters found in the warm tropical seas. Each mosaic is hand crafted by artisans at Linkasink facilities in Arizona. Mother of pearl is extremely hard and durable and, in fact, must be cut using a diamond blade. Unlike stone, mother of pearl will not stain, making it perfect for applications with sinks. These mosaic sinks can be cleaned with any mild cleanser. From an aesthetic standpoint, the natural pearl essence of this material as well as the variations in color give these sinks a very luxurious look. The sink measures 14" x 6" with a 1.5" drain and is also available in a larger version with a 17" diameter. Suggested retail price is $1400 - $1800.

Linea 800 Side-by-Side refrigerator

Linea Refrigeration is the new Energy Star rated counter-depth, Side-by-Side refrigerator line from Bosch Appliances, that is designed to deliver superior food preservation and inventive interior features, combined with a clean, modern design. Available in a 300, 500 and 800 Series, the new lineup complements Bosch full product suite of Eco-friendly and highly efficient home appliances. All models feature the DualCool system that enables independently controlled temperature settings. This system ensures consistent temperatures within each side, while eliminating the transfer of odors between compartments for more hygienic storage of food. When combined with the quiet speed compressor that quickly responds to temperature needs, the Linea Side-by-Side refrigerators ensures maximum, yet efficient cooling performance to keep foods fresher longer. Multiple sensors throughout the refrigerator and freezer also help to maintain consistent temperatures, while the noFrost system doesn't require defrosting, which saves time and energy.

The Linea has a clean and sophisticated exterior look achieved by its door extending all the way to the floor. This distinctive long door eliminates the appearance of a bulky grill, which as you can see from our recent Side by Side refrigerator review is quite common in many premium refrigerators. Hidden hinges also contribute into a seamless built-in look. Illuminated flush and frameless ice and water dispenser with exterior display is perfectly integrated into the freezer door. The lockable and easy to clean dispenser is tall enough to accommodate large container sizes.

The SuperCool and SuperFreeze functions enable you to quickly chill warm and fresh foods straight from the supermarket by dropping the interior temperature to the lowest possible setting. Once this temperature has been reached, the refrigerator or freezer will then automatically return to its original setting. The Multi-Flow system provides high circulation of cold air throughout many openings in each compartment of these Side-by-Side refrigerators for more uniform and constant temperatures, ensuring that foods remain fresher longer.

Fresh MoCo: Bottle House, Cosmic Burst, Trompe l'Oeil

freshmoco_june_10_2008.jpg
The past week saw some additions of note to the pages of Fresh MoCo. The Klein Bottle House, a holiday home outside Melbourne, is a many-facetted structure that is evocative of a futuristic gemstone. Stuart Haygarth’s Cosmic Burst of multi-coloured plastic balls is a suitable fixture for the MAC flagship stores in NY and LA. More sharp angles were seen in Steven Holl’s Porosity Bench, and Andrea Salvini picked up on the angles in four designs for modern cabins. The Trompe l'Oeil floor mat offers some instant aging for floors in brick or wood finishes. Walls were covered by leaning-molds, a modular system designed by Maruja Fuentes for public spaces where people can lean comfortably while waiting, and the Dali-esque clock by Puur Design. You can’t stop time from creeping 'round the corner.

I finally managed to get my foot inside the door, and I'm glad I did. On display were beautiful retro futuristic designs that made me think of Naoto Fukasawa, one of my favourite designers. I especially liked the Colombo Two, a trimline style DECT phone that looks to re-establish the lost relationship between earpiece and mouthpiece on modern telephones. The phone is manufactured by Suncorp Communications and should be available spring/summer 2008. According to Chauhan Studio's homepage, they are also planning to release the corded telephone Colombo Three in 2008.”

Matt Kotlarczyk is the sculptor behind Cincinnati’s Refined Sugar Studio whose lighting designs caught many an eye at ICFF. Shown above is the Refined Cereal light fixture, the forbidden fruit of the designer’s childhood. The temptation, like the bold colours of the images, will not fade over time. Another noteworthy piece we saw was the Eat Me dining table with a glass tabletop resting over 1, 800 tiny white bulbs. Amongst these are red bulbs that form words derived from the letters in the word MEAT. A light sequencer allows the words and phrases (EAT ME, FAT ME, EAT MEAT, ETC.) to appear randomly at the six place settings. Kotlarczyk also created low tables out of gold encrusted chandeliers from Cincinnati’s Albee Theater.
