Lunar cabinet glows in the dark with eco-paint
We are captivated by the lunar visions created in this glowing ‘Fullmoon’ credenza. Designed by Sotirios Papadopoulos for ENNEZERO, this intriguing piece brings a realistic recreation of the moon’s surface to light with a luminescent paint. The Kartell store in New York recently exhibited Mr. Impossible, a series of chairs by Philippe Starck. While the design for Mr. Impossible was conceived years ago, the technology needed to weld two transparent shells together did not exist until recently. Also on display was Starck's Misses Flower Power, a collection of large-scale prototype vases made from transparent polycarbonate.

Sunplant photovoltaic foliage on display in Milan
Clearly a design better suited to sunny Italy than our native London, Toshiyuki Kita’s Sunplant, which we spotted in Milan this year, is an elaborate outdoor energy installation that fuses art with environmentally friendly gadget power. It’s a lovely metaphor: energy from the sun hits one of the plant’s eight PV panel ‘leaves’, which is [...]

Organica Kitchen from Mobalco: for your eco-friendly lifestyle

Mobalco Organica kitchen

The instantly recognisable Organica eco-friendly kitchen from Mobalco represents new ways of thinking about the kitchen which are suitable for our modern times. Incorporated elements specifically consider the way we live now – a bread machine for natural home-baked products, a water purifier to cut your use of plastic bottles, and separate bins for recycling. This considerate thinking means that the Organica kitchen can actually help you do your part for the environment. With the ridged texture of the wooden doors and three unusual cylindrical cooking vent extractors, the look is bang up to date. Stainless steel accents such as the handles and skirting complement the wood. The theme of Visual Reference Studio’s booth at ICFF was Thermosensitive Experiences. The Mississippi-based design team of Erin Hayne and Nuno Gonçalves Ferreira is behind the Swamp Collection, a series of heat-sensitive stools and lounges that integrate materials that allow the surface to change colour temporarily in response to body heat or ambient heat. Far from being a gimmicky fad option, the collection is a class act that encourages users to interact with objects in order to enjoy tactile experiences. Visual Reference Studio’s new collection includes Touch wall panels for public spaces and the Please Touch pillows that offer a smaller scale thermosensitive option. A new colourway was also presented, so that there is also the option of seeing the red material change to violet.

Contemporary Kitchen from Gruppo Euromobil – Filanta combines warm wood and strong steel elements…

Euromobil kitchen Filanta in walnut wood and steel

Gruppo Euromobil have thought of simply everything in their design of this stunning contemporary kitchen, the Filanta. The combination of blond walnut wood and free system steel is ideal to emphasise the unique qualities of both materials: the comfortable warmth of wood and the reliable strength of steel. The straight, uncomplicated lines have a certain elegance that encourages focus on the serious business of cooking. The doors of the cupboards and wall units conceal generous storage whilst functioning to retain the minimalist aesthetic. Yet, this is a kitchen that feels welcoming – cook books can be proudly displayed on the ample natural wood shelves rather than hidden away. A breakfast bar at one end the island unit will likewise help you to feel at home. A European kitchen with a strong presence and pared-down appeal: the Filanta is by Gruppo Euromobil.

Prima AV Kitchen from Binova - sliding doors system enables two-sided design

Prima AV Kitchen from Binova - sliding doors system enables two-sided design

[New Product]

Binova Prima AV kitchen with sliding doors system

Designed by Paolo Nava and Fabio Casiraghi, the Prima AV “avant-garde” kitchen from Binova continues its exploration of the relationship between kitchen and living area. Prima AV once again transforms the international kitchen system, interpreting once more the relationship between operational and functional space and the area set aside for dialogue and communication - the kitchen moves away from the walls, opening itself up to the other rooms producing a new relationship with space. From top to bottom, the new architecture highlights a virtual boundary that hides or reveals what is happening beyond. The wall units are dropped from the ceiling and are being accessible on two sides, symmetrically or asymmetrically, and can be dynamically changed thanks to the sliding doors system. The base units repeat this dual outlook where the front mingles with the back. The steel worktop opens up to transform itself from a closed material volume to a container for utensils, with suspended drawers. The door handles appear to be totally integrated with the vertical surfaces, reacting when touched in order to offer a easy access, without totally disappearing. "The electrical appliances explore the water-based activities in an organized and changing space where they wash, dip, drain and drip. Also the new exhaust hoods are increasingly camouflaged and integrated or are made into an explicitly focal point." Binova

Ingo Maurer’s SoHo space was the site for new lighting during ICFF. The Tu-Be pendant light that Maurer designed with Ron Arad featured toothpaste tubes in much profusion. There were plenty of versions of the snakelike Alizzcooper lamp in pendant, table and floor models. Some were even threatening the rats in the Seven Rats installation created in honour of the year of the rat, a time of plenty and a good time for new beginnings. All of Maurer’s new pieces are a delight to take in, but the Early Future table lamp and the Flying Future overhead are of special note. Maurer worked in conjunction with Osram to create pieces that use modules of organic light emitting diodes, a new polymer technology.

Natural Stone Washbasin from Bandini - the Prisma and Vela Moonstone washbasins

Bandini stone washbasin Prisma free-standing

The sculptural qualities of the Prisma and Vela stone washbasins by Bandini can be appreciated when viewed from any angle. The objects, made from Moonstone, change and interact with the lighting, setting and viewer so that your experience is intensely personal. The Prisma has a triangular shape and spirals upwards with a cheeky twist. Vela is as soft and free-flowing as a cloth caught by the wing. Minimal and smooth, the form is interrupted only by two ripples on the outer surface. Standing alone, the washbasins would be viewed as art. But combined with the washing function, the sinks are integrally useful in our everyday lives – something beautiful to experience again each day. Available as commanding free-standing versions or pleasing sinks to be placed on a vanity, the stone washbasins from Bandini bring us closer to natural elements.

ICFF 2008: Restaurants?

Tomorrow we're going to the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York. Sabine Modder, Sally Kuchar, Jaime Kopke and I will be covering the show every day (and for days afterward).

Here's a question for all the full time, and part time, New Yorkers:

Seeing as the Jacob Javits Center is in a somewhat barren/ industrial area, where are the closest good restaurants?

Feel free to include fast food places, and for that matter, any good restaurants that you can recommend in NYC in general. Praize the place in MoCo Local (learn more here) and we'll include you in a draw for a free book; Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan's Apartment Therapy Presents: Hundreds of Design Solutions. Please leave a valid email address when you register so that if you get picked we can contact you and send you the book. Thanks for sharing your favorites.

Milan Design Week 2008: 101% Designed in Brussels

Milan Design Week 2008: 101% Designed in Brussels

101_percent_brussels_2008.jpg
The 101% Designed in Brussels was a small exhibition in Zona Tortona with pieces that packed a lot of punch. Atelier Blink was our favorite design studio in this venue. The Brocante de salon rug that incorporates a black and white photo of flea market wares was hanging on the wall, and immediately went to the top of our favorite-rugs-of-all-time chart. The many pairs of legs of the Octopus seat was an attention-grabber, and whole piece can be wrapped even closer around anyone seated in it by using snaps found along the hems. The Rendez-Vous wallpaper seemed like typical swirls and paisleys, but a closer look revealed a more kamasutra approach. Raphael Charles had a couple of designs that were fun, like the Stars lighting, small-scale constellations, and the 33T Pouf, a stool/storage combination for the music-lover.

New Bulthaup B2 Kitchen - the marvel of the minimal

Bulthaup B2 kitchen

Busy people, who have no time for disorganised spaces, will appreciate the organisation of the new Bulthaup B2 kitchen. If you love to cook, but hate the associated clutter that can so easily build up, this kitchen may be the solution that you have been looking for... Imagine having everything to hand in an open, mobile kitchen concept, and having a place for everything within the workbench, kitchen tool cabinet and appliance housing cabinet. Picture opening up a spacious B2 organiser or pantry unit to find all your kitchenware, cooking implements, crockery, small appliances, cups and glasses arranged in a time saving and visually appealing array! Simply select what you need (with no rummaging around in the back of a cupboard) and then close the unit up again to reveal its attractive wood finish. The minimal design of the interior and exterior spaces of the Bulthaup B2 pares down the kitchen for those who understand that the art of cooking lays in “the best materials, the best tools, the best raw ingredients and the best crockery.” This is the philosophy of the Bulthaup B2.

Aero 1 Wood Kitchen from Mobalco - a suspended kitchen to defy gravity?

Mobalco Aero 1 kitchen

Bold, refined, urbane… these qualities characterize the Aero 1 wood kitchen from Mobalco. The pared down, angular form allows the beautifully grained wood to take centre stage. The Aero 1 kitchen seems to defy gravity – the island rests upon four small legs with the weight of the 11mm thick natural wood distributed perfectly. The wall and cupboard units are installed suspended from the wall, hovering intriguingly above the ground. The unit for plates and glasses boasts interior lighting, likewise, the splash back area above the sink and worktop is illuminated. Other details such as the gliding drawers and the minimalist metal handles all contribute to the overall effect: one of exclusive kitchen design. From Mobalco, the Aero 1 kitchen will float into your kitchen like a breath of fresh air to be enjoyed for many years to come.

Wall Hung Washbasin Flux from Sanindusa - an uncomplicated statement of your style

Sanindusa Flux wall hung washbasin

So smart, so simple - it’s surprising that the original Flux wall hung washbasin from Sanindusa hasn’t been thought of before. The water drains, naturally, elegantly, with the force of gravity, running down the slanting sides of the washbasin. At the bottom of the sink, where the two angled edged would meet, there is instead a gap. That thin slit lets the water out - nothing more, nothing less. The Flux wall hung washbasin is available with an option to install taps on the wall above, or on the basin itself. Also, it can come with an extended top that allows an integrated waste bin for both hygiene and pulled-together style. The waste bin is housed in a gorgeous wooden cupboard which opens for quick and easy disposal - ideal for either home or business use. For more on the Flux: contact Sanindusa.

Axor Starck Shower Collection - new modular shower from Hansgrohe

[New Product]

Axor Starck ShowerCollection presented by Philippe Starck

Presented on April 16th at the Milan Furniture Fair by Philippe Starck and Axor's Philippe Grohe, this brand-new shower - Axor Starck shower - by global designer brand Hansgrohe is an exciting product aimed at total ‘well-being in the bathroom environment’. A small, perfect square measuring 12 x 12 centimeters is the basic element of the new shower collection developed by Philippe Starck and Axor.
“The Axor Starck ShowerCollection,” said Philippe Starck, “is a complete program, a genuine system consisting of a whole lot of small, square objects that can be combined to form an infinite range of totally flexible solutions. This is what we call Haute Couture for the shower.”
"Shower, thermostat, lighting and speaker modules as well as shelf units conform to the same square shape and the same austere design, as are the control elements such as faucets and mixers. All the modules can be combined freely in any arrangement, and in any number. Used as a free-standing individual solution or combined in a group, whether in a horizontal or vertical arrangement, centered in space or distributed in an asymmetrical design – the result will always be new and highly individual living environments in the bathroom."
Axor has always been concerned to present approaches which envision a holistic bathroom design, rather than simply individual products. Clean, gleaming, and with strong lines and a square shape, the Axor Starck modular shower goes far beyond the practical.

Fresh MoCo: Two-Timer, Vagabond, Knitted Lights

fresh_moco_08_may_08_2.jpg
We know we shouldn’t … but wouldn’t the silver leather sofa at Fresh MoCo be such a wicked indulgence? There is also a great Two-Timer clock from Established and Sons and a Vagabond Cabinet with a wild variety of knobs from One Eco Home. The interactive knitted lights from Weidekamp are in complete and utter contrast to the silver couch, for a different mood and emotional need. The Bright Awakening pillow alarm clock from Embryo looks like something that has to be tried out before making any decisions, but it certainly looks tempting – if one has to get up. And the Buzzispace room dividers are a great way to create different zones, plus they are made from recycled plastics.

Modern Vanity Set from Regia - Solid Color with Special Detail

Regia Batik bathroom vanity set in Black with matching cabinets

The Batik modern vanity set from Regia is ideal for those who love bold color, but not at the expense of detail. Commanding, matt or glossy vanities in vivid hues, the coordinating Batik cabinets can also feature a lovely cut-out abstract pattern which may be picked up on a door panel on the vanity, a metal panel over the sink area for keeping soap and towels, and/or on wall cupboard doors. The balance between color and pattern ensures a modern look sure to be central focus in the bathroom. Batik vanity grows even more interesting upon close inspection… the asymmetrical shape of the unit and the attractive glass sink complete the style. The front panel of the vanity pulls out to reveal ample space for storage, making it a suitable choice even for families. Another rather enviable, fully customisable item from Regia: the Batik modern vanity.

A concept kitchen design by Emanuel Gargano and Marco Fagioli, the Anima kitchen draws inspirations from places such as craftsmen and mechanical workshops.

Ceramica Flaminia new Void Washbasin and Bidet designed by Fabio Novembre

Ceramica Flaminia Void washbasin

The soft form of the Ceramica Flaminia Void Washbasin designed by Fabio Novembre is an aesthetic discovery that will please the senses. The gentle dent-like impression on the sides of the bidet and the hole that runs through it create an organic feeling, as if the object has been shaped by the flow of water over many years. The designer likens the Void to ‘stones in a river which are smoothed by the internal and external flows of our life’. Fabio Novembre says “Water moulds materials with a particular harmony that every designer aspires to”. Sensual and natural, water from the faucet surges into the Void Bidet to complement its shape. Ceramica Flaminia, an Italian company, is expert in interpreting the forms around us into eye-catching ceramic equivalents, as demonstrated with the Void Washbasin and Void Bidet.

Franz-Josef Schulte brings us ‘Workstation 1’ that has an elegant milk glass panel (that is illuminated from within) and a practical paper and document tray. Mounted on lockable rollers, the workstation can even be moved around. It comes in the tasty ‘Tutti-Frutti’ collection of woods (olive, wild cherry, plum, apple and walnut) as well as other classic woods. Or, if you prefer, the workstation can be made in white lacquered MDF sides with wooden drawers… or the reverse. Surf the net, charge your mobile phone, and bring technology into the heart of your home with the Kitchen Workstation by Schulte Design.

Alternatively, combine cooking and dining with another versatile Schulte Design table

Ceramica Flaminia new Void Washbasin and Bidet designed by Fabio Novembre
